Get back to nature; chill out in the bush

WagonDrift Game Lodge

Hi Everybody,

We have not sent out a newsletter for quite a while now mainly because Clive and Sharon are working in Johannesburg and we are passing one another on the way in or out the door.  And over weekends there is so much to do that a newsletter is the last thing on their minds. Everybody is well though so I thought I would try my hand at a newsletter to keep in contact with old friends.

Being winter, the grass is short so game viewing is excellent. It’s great to have our regular guests returning.

Young buck keep arriving; just over a dozen impala in March, a couple of waterbuck in early May, and this week we spotted a baby blesbuck with its umbilical cord still attached.  A recent game count showed we had over a dozen blesbuck, wildebeest, waterbuck, kudu and red hartebeest and over 50 impala.  We still have only 7 zebras and that is not going to change till we get a male!

Those of you who have been here in the past 6 months will know that we have also acquired two Jack Russell pups, Nina and Zara. A few weeks ago, they had an encounter with a Cobra, who was trying to find a nice warm place in the bush to hibernate. Well, I was called out of my office to find Nina pulling on the snake’s tail and Zara pulling behind the Cobra’s neck. They were having a ball! The cobra was about 1.5 meters long and would not hassle anybody, if not being confronted.  In the end the cobra did manage to get away and Nina and Zara ended up in ICU in Onderstepoort.  Nina came home after about 4 days and Zara was in and out of hospital for a week and a half. They are fine now and WagonDrift would not be the same without them. Needless to say, they are back into the bushes already, chasing monkeys and sometimes buck.

Thys & Martie ( 5 times since August 2009) are also regulars and Thys has assumed the role of honorary electrical engineer at the lodge, always finding something to fix.

There are many others (Colin and Marilyn are good examples) who also return frequently and who have become part of the family. Winter brings not only good game viewing but also the opportunity to gather around the fire in the evening, participate in the good natured banter, or watch the world cup along with other enthusiasts.

Why not give us a call and get out to WagonDrift for a well earned break?

All the best from us all at the Lodge

Text Box: DB5 Game Reserve Update
The official entrance Gates are in place but the opening has been delayed because the local community has asked that a wall be built between the Reserve and their residential area.
This should be completed within the next few months, and the lion and elephants should be released by September, 2010

It is great to have our regular guests returning so frequently. Konrad and Nellie are regular guests and visited us 8 times in the past year.  Konrad walks the whole farm on every visit and comes back with the most awesome photographs, including this one, which he suggested that we place this picture as a friendly warning to prospective poachers.
